Don't forget to Be Creative!
Making a Dungeons and Dragons game (D&D) interesting is the responsibility of any Dungeon Master (DM). This can be hard to do for many reasons the storyline not being interesting enough for some of your players or not enough fighting for the others. Don’t worry. You can find a happy medium to keep both types of players happy.
Most D&D storylines follow the typical idea of a group that meets up and then travels around the world either to become heroes and save the world or just to pick fights with monsters. As the DM you can play with these ideas to make the game more interesting for your players. One idea I recently came across for making game time more interesting was instead of having your players wander around the D&D world give them a home or a base of operations.
Have Different Monsters Fight Together in a Combo. Another idea to keep the battle happy players interest is to have unique or interesting fight situations. You can do this by having a variety of monsters that are teamed up with each other for example instead of a group of goblins attacking the party (your group), you could have a combination of different undead characters like zombies, ghouls, skeletons. |
Give Them a Home!
This idea creates a different environment for a story to develop because there are the NPC’s (Non-playable-characters) that your players will have to interact with on a regular basis. This interaction will cause the game story to develop differently than in a regular adventure style because there will be NPC’S that know your player’s characters and will be able to interact with them on a level of neighbor or friend instead of just acquaintance. Having a home or base will cause your players to play the game a little differently. If a fight gets started at the local inn the players involved will have to deal with the consequences of the fight instead of just leaving and heading off to the next town. |
Just remember not to overpower the monsters. If you don’t adjust the creature’s abilities somehow then you might end up killing your party and that usually isn’t fun for the players. You also don’t want the monsters to be so easy that the players can hit them once and win, that just gets boring.
Combine The Two: a Home and Monster Combos
You can even combine these to ideas to create a storyline where there is enough fighting for the battle happy players and an interesting environment for the others. A combination game might be something like the players live here (X see image below) but they travel around to nearby areas to protect their hometown from say a zombie invasion. These are just a few ideas to be a little more creative as a DM. There are many more out there that I haven’t even found yet. Feel free to try any of your own ideas to make gameplay more interesting for your players as well.
