What I learned |
I developed this website because I want to give advice to new players who want to be a Dungeon Master for a game of Dungeons and Dragons. My conviction for this project stems from my first experience of attempting to run a campaign. It was a disaster. I rolled a Nat 1 (natural 1 with a 20 sided dice) on that attempt. The game I had planned fell apart because I assumed that a good DM generated random encounters without planning them ahead of time. I thought the only thing needed before hand was the story-line. .

I later learned that very few DMs randomly create the battles that their players go through. Most plan every detail down to what encounters happen and when they happen. Those who can make things up as they go, understand the rules so well that they don’t have to look them up any more to run a campaign. Because I didn’t understand the rules well enough as a beginner I found myself unable to run an effective game. I want to help new DMs understand that they can run a fun game and become a great DM without on the spot encounter creation.
I learned that the best DM appears to do things randomly but actually has all the details planned ahead of time, every battle, every treasure reward, every town, and an outline of the story they want to take the players through. They don’t just do everything on the spot. Yes, a certain element of randomness exists in the game because of the use of dice and chance, but a good DM has already considered the different possibilities and has a plan for each potential outcome.

Purpose
New players don’t know these things because the older players don’t usually tell them. I didn’t figure this out until my husband (also an avid D&D player and gamer) explained it to me when I began designing my second campaign. I want to provide information for new players so they can create their own games and feel like they accomplished something worthwhile.
